In meeting with this busy pediatrics practice, two things were immediately clear: create a playful atmosphere that evoked their name/branding within an environment that emphasized children’s safety.  Phoenix Planning provided programming services to assist the practice in identifying their critical rooms which included 7 exam rooms, a central core for check–in, lab/nurse stations and check out.  The shape of the shell space enabled a circular circulation path around this core with lobby, exam rooms and doctor’s office around the perimeter.

 

The exam rooms' millwork incorporated a toy box and reading book shelf as well as ample storage for the bulky supplies often needed.  Magnetic locks kept small hands out of dangerous areas.  Child safety and comfort was the most important designing protocol. The Doctors wanted a soft floor surface where children were present and carpet tiles were essential so that they could be easily replaced.  All floor height electrical outlets had child safety protection, window coverings were divided with vertical blinds above a chair rail height mullion and frosted film below so that choking or strangulation hazards would be eliminated.
